Chacaltaya Mountain (5300 meters), located at only 1 hour from La Paz, was during several years the highest ski resort of the world. Connected with a rudimentary ski-tow, the resort was accessible only at in a certain period of the year.
Indeed, it could only be possible to
ski during the austral summer, from December to February, because of the harshness
climate in winter.
The ski resort has been affected by global
warming and the glacier disappeared in May 2009.
Since this month, the ski-tow has been
removed and only an observation laboratory for particles remains (the highest
of the world).
Today, Chacaltaya is an ideal departure
point to start wonderful mountain treks.
