This relatively unknown region of Bolivia is home to countless natural wonders. It is on these "high Andean plateaus" bristling with snow-covered peaks that an ethnic group, as mysterious as it is isolated, has chosen to settle: the Kallawayas.

Sumptuous landscapes will accompany you in these infinite spaces, at the same time wild, remote, with an insolent beauty. This excursion is proposed to you in the form of trekking, the best way to get acquainted with these lands populated by an enigmatic ethnic group.

Day by day

day 1: Road to Pelechuco
Early in the morning, departure by private vehicle towards Pelechuco, in the foothills of the Apolobamba Mountain Range.

The track that we discover offers fabulous landscapes; first, the north side of Lake Titicaca, unknown to tourism; then the majestic Ancohuma and Illampu, imposing massifs of the Cordillera.

Short lunch stop before resuming the road.

The arrival at the small town of Pelechuco (3520 meters) is a vertiginous descent; its Quechua name alone sums up the nature of the place: "place where there are clouds".

Journey time: approximately 10 hours

Steps: La Paz and its region Apolobamba Cordillera
day 2: Katantica Pass and Kucha Muyurina Lagoon

Today we start the trek uphill to reach the Katantica pass, culminating at more than 4700 meters above sea level.

Once this difficulty is over, you will have deserved a good lunch break near the Kucha Muyurina lagoon. From there, the view of the superb snowy mountain tops, especially the Azucarani (5600 meters above sea level), offers contrasts and grandiose reliefs.

Then you will continue walking for approximately 1 hour to reach the camp site.

day 3: The community of Hilo Hilo
Today's hike will take us in the direction of the small community of Hilo Hilo, accessible after about 2 hours of walking.

Continuing straight on, you will reach a small community living from llama breeding, where you will stop for lunch. All along the way, the local biodiversity, which has managed to develop in this hostile environment, is revealed in all its splendour.

At the end of the day, the arrival point will be the Liriuni plateau, where you will set up your camp.

Night in camp
day 4: Sunchuli Pass and the Incacancha Valley
Arriving at the Sunchuli pass, after an hour or so of climbing, the view is superb: several peaks are nearby, including the Cuchillo and the Cololo.

Then, direction a new pass, that of Viscachani. Then gradually descend to reach an old abandoned camp: there was a time when gold diggers were working there.

After stopping for lunch on the edge of a lagoon, you will reach a belvedere, "Mil curvas" from where the view of the Acamani, from the top of its 5600 meters, is breathtaking.

Last step of the day, the descent towards the Incacancha valley where the camp will be installed.

day 5: Kallawaya Culture
Beginning of this new stage by a climb lasting about 3 hours, in order to reach the Tombillo pass, which occupies an important place in the religious imaginary of the Bolivians.

Indeed, it is here that the processions go to give offerings to the divinities.

Then, you will begin a descent of about two hours to reach the site of Jatunpampa, which will shelter us during the lunch break.

Then, direction the camp site of this stage, Pajtcha Pata, where some families of the Kallawayas ethnic group reside; it will be the occasion to observe the daily activities of this ethnic group, such as agriculture, far from the tourist circuits.

day 6: The village of Curva
The sixth day of walking offers a section of walking without any major difficulty, towards the town of Curva.

Once you arrive in the village, you will take the path of the thermal waters of Charazani for a well-deserved moment of relaxation.

Night in a refuge (simple comfort).
day 7: Back to La Paz
Today return to La Paz in private vehicle.

Along the way, the low sides give a last look at the biodiversity of this region. At the end of the 10 hour drive, interspersed with stops, you will arrive (finally) in La Paz.
