The Main Square (the Plaza de armas)

The same as every city of Latin America, the Main Square is the heart and the city center of Lima. This is where Pizarro, conquistador that summited the Inca Empire and set down the Spanish royalty on this part of America, founded the City of the Kings. In the middle of the square surrounded by palm trees, there are a big fountain and a statue of Pizarro on horseback. All around the square, the enormous Cathedral, the Government Palace (it is possible to see the changing of the guard every day at midday and at 6 pm, with trumpets, lowering of the flag and strong discipline), the City Council with a neo-colonial style and lastly, the Archbishops Palace. This is the center of political and historical life and, for each important episode of the national life, the Main Square is immediately the center of manifestations.
