Kalahuata Island

The small and peaceful island’s name comes from the Aymara “house of Stone”. During the Inca period, it was a cemetery, from there the numerous “chullpas”, these funeral stones’ towers. The inhabitants of the only village, Queguaya, still refuse to install near to these towers because maledictions could happen to anyone who would desecrate it. These people essentially live thanks to resources of the lake, to the totora (Titicaca Lake’s reed), making boats until a few time ago, and handicraft, and mainly from fishing.
